For paid newsletters
A failed renewal needs a clear next step.
Follow up with branded Day 1/3/7 emails, a secure card-update page, pre-expiry reminders and a customer work queue, then review the outcome. Built for compatible Stripe Billing memberships. Starter is a flat $19/month with no recovery commission.
Free audit · No subscription required · Recovery in early access
Pay now and pause/skip/downgrade offers are EARLY ACCESS. Disabled by default. Real Stripe test-mode validation is pending. Keep disabled for customers until that validation is complete.
The problem
Understand the invoice before choosing the next step.
Payment status, customer intent and the effect of a reminder are different questions.
An unpaid renewal needs context
An expired card, required authentication or a generic bank decline can leave a renewal unpaid. A payment failure does not tell you why a reader wants to stay or leave. Review the invoice and offer a useful next step.
Retries and reader reminders work together
Keep your native Stripe retry policy. RescueDunning's Day 1/3/7 routine and optional expiry reminders need to be coordinated with your existing customer messages. Review overlapping settings before enabling recovery; a reminder does not prove it caused a payment.
Your brand is the trust
Readers pay you, not a billing vendor. Recovery emails carry your publication's logo and brand color, and replies come straight to you — so the fix feels like it's coming from the newsletter they already love, not a faceless payment system.
The workflow
Clear reminders. Explicit choices. Recorded outcomes.
New optional add-ons require separate setup and opt-in. An audit-only connection does not activate recovery.
Branded Day 1/3/7 recovery sequence
An eligible failure queues a branded Day 1/3/7 sequence. Remaining reminders stop after a verified card update or payment; an in-flight message cannot be recalled. A card save is recorded separately from the unpaid invoice.
Pre-dunning expiry alerts
With recovery access, pre-expiry scanning is on unless you disable pre-dunning. Configured scheduling and delivery are still required. A nightly scan refreshes Stripe card data and queues eligible reminders in 30-, 14- and 7-day windows. Late imports skip missed windows; a failed Stripe refresh skips the scan. Reminders do not guarantee delivery or a successful renewal. Available in early access.
A secure card-update link
The email opens a branded card-update portal. Saving a card alone does not charge. Pay now is EARLY ACCESS. Disabled by default. Real Stripe test-mode validation is pending. Keep disabled for customers until that validation is complete. Its intended flow requests separate payment authorization after a verified card save in the same recent browser session.
Check your membership integration
The basic connection uses Stripe OAuth and Connect events. Confirm your membership platform and invoice configuration are compatible. In-app prompts and observed activity require your own authenticated product integration and server-verified billing-admin roles.
Recovery dashboard
Review unpaid invoices, card updates, recorded payments and delivery evidence. A payment after a reminder may come from retries or another action. Optional holdout evaluation reports uncertainty; small newsletter cohorts may remain inconclusive.
Free 90-day loss audit
Before you change anything, see what failed payments already cost you. The audit analyzes 90 days of your Stripe invoice history and shows failed renewals and revenue at risk. No subscription is required.
FAQ
Newsletter questions, answered.
I use Ghost for paid memberships. Will this work?+
Check that your connected Stripe Billing account and invoice shapes are supported. The basic reminder workflow uses Stripe Connect events, while optional activity and in-app prompts need an authenticated integration in your product. A platform name alone does not establish compatibility.
Should I turn off Stripe Smart Retries?+
Keep your native retry policy and review overlapping customer messages before enabling RescueDunning. An observed payment cannot by itself tell you which action caused it.
How do I avoid duplicate reminders?+
Review your existing native messages before enabling the Day 1/3/7 routine. Contact holds and suppressions are respected, and remaining reminders stop after a verified card update or payment. An already in-flight message cannot be recalled. Optional personal notes are manual drafts, so review previous contact before using one.
Can I offer a pause instead of cancellation?+
These offers are EARLY ACCESS. Disabled by default. Real Stripe test-mode validation is pending. Keep disabled for customers until that validation is complete. They also require merchant opt-in and a customer preview with explicit consent. The initial supported shape is one fixed monthly item at quantity one, without trials, tax, discounts or an existing schedule. Pause and skip void new invoices in the stated window; existing debt remains collectible. A downgrade applies at renewal. Unsupported combinations do not proceed.
Do you store card numbers?+
Never. Readers type their card into Stripe's secure card fields, and the details go straight to Stripe. We never see or store full card numbers.
What does the audit involve?+
The free 90-day Stripe loss audit analyzes your last 90 days of Stripe invoice history and shows you failed renewals and revenue at risk. Connect through Stripe to run the audit for free. Stripe grants read and write access; the audit only reads invoices and never activates recovery.
